Courseworks
were delighted to have been awarded the Tudor Rose Award and Gold Medal
for Best in show at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for their
design of the Mitsubishi Motors sponsored Urban Chic Garden. This used
modern materials to create a low maintenance highly unusual garden inspired
by the bold simplicity of Japanese Zen gardens combined with the contemporary
urban style of the new Mitsubishi Shogun. The space aimed to reflect the
notion of a modern courtyard garden - fresh ideas within a contemplative
space.
Design
features included:
- The
driveway and garden, devised as one entire space are linked through
its design elements.
- Central
wall with window openings, painted a warm terracotta colour.
- Grass
stepping stones link the two spaces, passing across the solid black
granite water garden.
- The
central water pool, filled with silver balls to create a unique contemporary
element.
- Upper
decking area, constructed from dark stained, highly smoothed wood providing
ample space for a low table and seating cushions.
- Lower
decking area, constructed from finished steel panels, darkened in colour
to contrast elegantly with the reflective silver ball pool.
- Planting
located within the beds is to provide organic shapes and forms to help
soften the strong lines of the garden, and generate a space of tranquillity
and contemplation.
Images of this show adorn 'Backyard
Blueprints' the latest book by the internationally renowned garden designer
and writer David Stevens.
The
garden was constructed over a three week period after several months of
design and planning. The images show the construction process from start
to finish. (artists impression + annotations, 6 pics of construction circa.
4 of finished item again with annotations)
